Mallya Aditi International School (M.A.I.S) is a school located in Yelahanka, Bangalore, India. The school's current principal is Sathish Jayarajan (2003 - ). Anne Warrior was succeeded as Principal by Ranee Noronha (1999-2002), who has since become the Principal of the Dhirubhai Ambani International School, Mumbai.

The school is named after Bangalore billionaire and Member of Parliament Vijay Mallya as a result of a generous endowment.

M.A.I.S is located at 13°06′08″N, 77°34′59″E

After it was built, the school's architect won several awards for designing the modern, minimalist lines of the school buildings. The buildings are "open" - corridors are not enclosed and lead to large, airy courtyards around which are several classrooms.

Aditi, as it is popularly known, has a broad curriculum for its elementary school students that is designed to acquaint them with both Eastern and Western culture and methods of study. Aditi students study Indian languages, namely Hindi and Kannada, but can also study English, French, or German. Western music, Indian dance and Indian classical music are also offered.

Examinations are held once at the end of each academic year for grades 6, 7 and 8. For grades 9 and 10, a choice between the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) and the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) is offered. For grades 11 and 12, a choice between the Indian School Certificate (ISC) and the Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE) is offered. IGCSE and AICE are conducted by the University of Cambridge International Examinations - CIE.Students used to start to receive "real" homework from the 6th grade, however this age has been recently advanced.

[edit] Clubs and facilities

Sports facilities include basketball, football, cricket and volleyball. School starts at 7:55 a.m. and ends at 2:45 p.m., with a break at 9:30-9:50 a.m. and at 12:05-12:40 p.m. The length of these breaks has been reduced from the year 2006-07. There are three computer labs - these serve The Junior School, The Senior School and the faculty. Alongside these computer labs, there are two "Tech Hubs", which also serve Students and Faculty with computers and educational material. There is also the Srishti School of Art, Design and Technology - an affiliated school - located on the Aditi campus. The school has also produced many critically acclaimed plays, musicals and concerts. Among the myriad of student clubs and organizations - such as the Model United Nations (students are always chosen to participate) - are many clubs relating to the arts. Aditi students run a Dramatic Society, Debating, Quiz and Chess Clubs, an acclaimed school choir, The M.A.I.S Film Society, The Photography Club and many other special-interest groups. The school is equally committed to excellence in the sciences and mathematics. An after-school Robotics Club (started and facilitated by Harvard-and-MIT-trained researcher, Shuchi Grover) meets once a fortnight and consists of many brilliant students; some of them winners of national awards.

Aditi students have a tradition of starting their own newspapers and magazines. Past student publications include Silhouette, The Scribe and The Scribbler. Current student journals are The Joke, and The White Crayon. Aditi has a rather undeserved reputation for lack of excellence at sports: the school's teams in football and basketball regularly perform well in inter-school events. It is the opinion of students however that the quality of the sports fields, in particular the football field, leaves a lot to be desired. Aditi's football field is less than a third the size of a true football field, with hockey-sized goals that aren't aligned to each other and an uneven mud surface. The small land area doesn't really allow for much expansion of the Physical education facilities. The school receives enough funding to keep maintain state-of-the-art educational resources and hence is able to maintain it's high standard of education.

[edit] Interact Club

Aditi is known across Bangalore for its proactive Interact Club, founded and supported by the Rotary Club of Bangalore.. A tradition at Aditi is Out of the Box, a well-known inter school competition run by the school's Interact Club, which attracts contestants from more than 20 schools. It was started in 2002 and has grown every year. The Interact Club also organizes an annual Retreat, in which club members attend an array of personal development workshops conducted by experienced professionals in the field. This year, the Interact Club has also planned a fund raising Music Concert, which aims at bringing together musical talent in schools and colleges around Bangalore in the hope of supporting the education of underprivileged children. The Interact Club also conducts several bake sales and personal development workshops throughout the year, and participates in other community-driven activities such as the annual Terry Fox Run and the collection of money for the National Association for the Blind.

[edit] Awards

In 2005, the school was awarded the Cambridge Fellowship by the University of Cambridge in England, in recognition of academic excellence among schools offering Cambridge qualifications. Only 20 secondary schools in the world have received this fellowship. In early 2005, Aditi also won the Intel Award for the Best Integration of Technology in Education 2004, from a pool of India's best schools.

In addition to this, Aditi has been one of the two or three schools chosen worldwide by the University of Cambridge to be prototypes in an experimental science exam (where the practical paper is completed through computer simulation). These schools were chosen based on their excellent academic record, and the results of the students in the board exams will decide whether or not the experimental paper will come into practice.
