Mall at Rockingham Park
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Coordinates: The Mall at Rockingham Park, located in Salem, New Hampshire, is the largest shopping mall in New Hampshire, with 1.25 million square feet of floor space.[1] The mall is adjacent to the Rockingham Park race track in Salem, and was the state's third shopping mall to be built. The mall now hosts with 140 stores, with anchors that include Macy's, J. C. Penney, and Sears.
In 2006, the mall's original Macy's store was closed and Macy's then moved into the location formerly occupied by Filene's (opened with the mall in 1991 as 140,000, expanded to 168,000 in 1998). The 159,000 square foot store previously occupied by Macy's was originally opened as Jordan Marsh in 1994. No plans have been formally announced as to the final disposition of this space.
Like the Pheasant Lane Mall in Nashua, it is located close to the Massachusetts border in order to attract residents of that state. New Hampshire has no sales tax on most goods. The success of the Mall at Rockingham Park, which opened in August 1991, caused the Methuen Mall across the line in Methuen, Massachusetts, to close in 1997, and be replaced with a "big box" center. It also caused the adjacent (and older) Rockingham Mall to convert into a "big box" center as well, as Salem could no longer support two shopping malls.
The mall is managed and partially owned by Simon Property Group.
