Malham Tarn is a lake about 800 m (0.5 mi) in diameter in the Yorkshire Dales National Park in England. The lake lies approximately 4 km (2.5 mi) to the north of the village of Malham. It is partially artificial, being deepened by damming in the late 18th century by Lord Ribblesdale IV. The lake and its surroundings are home to a nature reserve.
During a stay at nearby Malham Tarn House Charles Kingsley was inspired to write the Victorian-era novel The Water-Babies.[1]
The well-known Pennine Way passes along the lake shore.
The National Trust's Malham Tarn Estate is nearby. It is also close to the natural landmarks of Malham Cove, Gordale Scar and Janet's Foss.
