Malet Lambert High School is an 11-16 year old secondary educational establishment in Kingston upon Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire which in 2001 was awarded specialist Language College status and is now formally known as Malet Lambert School Language College. It recently showed the musical production of'The sound of music' Which was directed and choreographed by Daniel Sellers (drama teacher), with music by Margaret Wright (music teacher).
The school is situated on James Reckitt Avenue in an area to the east of the city and stands overlooking the council owned East Park.
The new school was named after Canon Joseph Malet Lambert, Chairman of the Higher Education Committee, who had been prominent in the field of education in Hull for some 40 years.
It opened in September 1932 replacing the Craven Street school, and entry, until 1944 was either by winning a Local Authority free place or by payment of fees. The origianal site was on holderness road but it was turned down because it was too expensive. £500!
Under the Education Act of 1944 the status of the school became that of a coeducational grammar school for pupils from 11 to 18 years of age. Entry was gained by passing the so called 11+ examination.
The school expanded in later years and took in sixth form pupils until the reorganisation of schools in Hull in the late 1980s which saw disappearance of junior high schools and the introduction of two Sixth Form colleges to cater for the whole city.
The current head teacher is Jane Dyer. Malet Lambert School is being completely refurbished as part of the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) plan in Hull, it's numbers are set to increase to 1500 pupils. The original headteacher , however was called Mr Shoosmith. The school is now a language college and teaches many languages such as: Chinese mandarin, French, Spanish, e.t.c. Mr Shoosmith was succeeded as Headmaster in 1951 by Mr Parslow (with one eyebrow going up and the other going down). Fanny Blankers-Koen, the famous Dutch Olypian from the 1948 Olympics, visited the school in 1950.
