[edit] Biography
Maleko maintains the family legacy of music and entertainment. One of four brothers with musical talent (Keoki, Kekoa, Miko), Maleko stands out as the emcee in a family of Disc Jockeys. Maleko grew up in Hawaii, living in Kailua as a teenager while attending St. Louis High School. His oldest brother Keoki moved to New York and made a name for himself, inspiring Maleko to work harder and do the same... only Maleko chose to do it a little closer to home.
Maleko began his radio career hosting Afternoon Drive at KDLX, a modern rock alternative station in Maryville, MO in 1994. While there, he crossed the boundaries of cablecast radio by ordering, assembling and powering up a small watt transmitter to rebroadcast the college station's signal. The result was as expected. People enjoyed the station in their cars for the first time ever... for about two weeks, when the FCC promptly removed the transmitter equipment from the rented attic space in which it was hidden. Thereafter he explored talk radio, hosting a "Love Lines" like sex-talk radio and television show with the moniker "Victor Simmons." The show was a cult success, and provided a much needed enema in rural Missouri. Earning his way through college, Maleko was a DJ and emcee at various bars and nightclubs, including Kansas City's largest nightclub, America's Pub, entertaining thousands of Westport, Missouri Partiers every weekend.
After college, Maleko moved to Los Angeles to manage the Gila Monster Music Factory, a recording studio in Hollywood, CA owned by Keoki. There, he worked with artists from the rap, rock, and electronic music scene, including Daniel Ash (Bauhaus, Tones on Tail, Love and Rockets), Gearwhore (Astralwerks) and others. After a little more than a year, Maleko decided it was time to return to the islands, when he heard about the birth of a new radio station.
Star 101.9 signed on the air in the late 90's, and Maleko joined the team as the Promotions Director. For several years, he planned the stations biggest parties, and coolest night club events. But he missed being on air, until a slot opened up doing nights on Star. From there, he moved up to Afternoons where he currently hosts the drive home from 2 to 7pm, Monday through Saturdays.
Maleko hosts "Maleko's Room" during the afternoon drive on Star 101.9-FM, and is the program director for Rock Hard 101.9-HD2, Hawaii's first High Definition radio station. Maleko regularly hosts weekly nightclubs, live music events, charity fundraisers, auctions and conventions. He has 12 years of experience conducting auctions, contests, game shows, interviews, master of ceremonies, karaoke, and talent competitions. On stage, Maleko is the primary emcee and host for major rock concerts in Hawaii, including recent performances by All American Rejects, My Chemical Romance, Evanescence, and Pepper plus Bay fest and Surf fest from 2002 to the present. On screen, Maleko has appeared in television commercials and television dramas and made several guest appearances as a celebrity judge and commentator for local talent programs and television shows.
