Presidential elections will be held in the Maldives on 10 October 2008.[1]
The incumbent Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, in power since 1978, will run again "for one more five-year term", despite the fact the he already served the maximum number of terms allowed; he argues that as the election will be held under a new constitution, the previous term limits don't apply. The opposition has stated it will take the case to court.[2]
