Malcolm Wrightson Nance

Malcolm Wrightson Nance is an American citizen and former United States Navy instructor of prisoner of war and terrorist hostage survival programs (SERE).[1][2] Since his retirement from government service he has served as an independent security consultant and author. Nance served as the chief consultant at Real World Rescue in 2000.[3] In 2004 Nance was working as a security consultant in Iraq.[4][5] In 2006 Nance was consulting over Australian security.[6]

He is notable for testifying before the United States Congress about the use of "extended interrogation techniques".[1][2] He told the House Judiciary Committee that:

  • "Waterboarding is torture, period."
  • "I believe that we must reject the use of the waterboard for prisoners and captives and cleanse this stain from our national honor."
  • "water overpowering your gag reflex, and then feel(ing) your throat open and allow pint after pint of water to involuntarily fill your lungs."
