Malaysian Islamic Study Group
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Malaysian Islamic Study Group (MISG) was founded in Peoria, Illinois in 1976 with the main objective to assist the Malaysian students in walking the path of success whilst they are here in America/Canada, fulfilling their responsibilities as students, as members of their communities and as servants of God. After more than 30 years of its establishment, MISG has a sizeable number of members in almost each university in America which has Malaysian students.[1]
In relation to all the other Islamic organizations in America, MISG is viewed as a foreigners-based Muslim student group that emerged out of the Islamic Society of North America.[2] Despite claims that MISG's founding was influenced by the ideology of Abul Ala Maududi[3], no evidence indicates such opinions. MISG is by and large an independent organization without binding allegiances to any other organizations.

[edit] Network
MISG operates two electronic mailing lists that are open for subscription to the public. The MISG-net[5] is open to all male and female subscribers, while Helwa_MISG is open only to females. The channels act as an information exchange media. In 2007, a new network was setup with the aim of connecting MISG representatives in the universities around US and Canada. MISG also has an internet forum.[6]
[edit] Units
Helwa
Helwa functions as a women's wing of MISG. It realizes its distinct vision by organizing seminars and training programs at both the campus and regional levels, catering to the welfare and needs of women and children.[7]
Lujnah Da'wah & Tarbiyah (LDT)
Lujnah Da'wah & Tarbiyah is the most integral component of MISG. It coordinates personal development and outreach activities for Malaysian students in the US and Canada. LDT attempts to foster a solid understanding and implementation of Islam as a way of life by disseminating knowledge and encouraging active discussion of relevant contemporary issues through weekly study circles. For campuses with a large number of Malaysian students, LDT facilitates a local weekly gathering conducted by capable MISG elders. For campuses with a smaller Malaysian community, LDT provides gatherings via online conferences. Intercampus visits are occasionally organized to strengthen brotherhood and sisterhood amongst members. These groups are then connected with the higher-level network of worldwide like-minded Islamic organizations.[8]
Unit Baitul Muslim
Offers matrimonial service to help those who are ready, especially students in making their first steps into the commitment of a marriage life.
