Malatia Yerevan

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Malatia Yerevan is an Armenian football club from Yerevan. The club participated in the first ever Armenian football competition after the split-up from the Soviet Union. After the regular competition they did not qualify for the championship stage, but were forced to play in the relegation stage. Here they finished in fourth position, meaning they were forced to play in the Armenian First League (second level behind the Armenian Premier League) for the 1993 season. However they merged with FC Kilikia Yerevan to form Malatia-Kilikia Yerevan and play in the Premier League where they finished 15th and were relegated immediately again. The clubs would split off again and Kilikia came back to life after the first club named FC Pyunik changed their name in the 1999 season. Malatia however would never play at the highest level again, although they did win the 2001 Armenian First League and were officially promoted to the Premier League, but they were eventually disbanded by the Armenian Football Federation before the start of the 2002 season.
