The Malagasy presidential election, 2001 was held on 16 December 2001.

President of Madagascar Didier Ratsiraka sought re-election, having been elected at the 1996 presidential election. Official results saw him take 40% of the vote to Marc Ravalomanana's 46%. As Ravalomanana did not appear to have won a majority, a run-off election was scheduled for early 2002. However, Ravalomanana claimed that the poll had not been counted correctly and that he had won a majority in the first round.

Ravalomanana was sworn in as President on 22 February 2002 (and again on May 6) and fought Ratsiraka's supporters for control of the country. In early July Ratsiraka fled the country and Ravalomanana became the uncontested leader of Madagascar.
