Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM) or MARA Junior Science College is an institution created by Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Malay: indigenous People's Trust Council; commonly abbreviated as MARA), a Malaysian government agency. The purpose of the institution is to help provide better learning facilities for bright malay students in local schools throughout Malaysia.
MRSM benefits mostly bright students especially from the rural areas in Malaysia. This is mainly because most rural schools in Malaysia didn't have enough learning facilities and infrastructures to help its successful and bright students full of potential.

[edit] Admission
Every year, students with distinction in their local public exams are encouraged to apply for the admission to the MRSM.
Students enrolling into MRSMs will have to undergo the Ujian Kecenderungan Kemasukan MRSM (English: MRSM Entrance Tendency Test), shortened by the abbreviation UKKM. These tests are made harder than how their actual exams are made, in order to provide admission to the best students possible.
[edit] Academic system
Students are primarily assessed through a system which is similar to the grading systems in universities and/or colleges, in which they are best known among the students as PNG - short for Purata Nilaian Gred, in English roughly it translates into Grade Points Average (GPA). By the end of their final semesters they will be awarded a certificate of graduation for those who succeeded to score at least TPNG (Timbunan Purata Nilaian Gred - or in English, Cumulative Grade Points Average or CGPA) 2.00 and above.
In short, their grading system is almost as similar to universities and/or colleges in general.
They still have to take both Penilaian Menengah Rendah and Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia national examinations.
However, students use the usual academic ladders in Malaysia when it comes to the classes system, most MRSM starts from Form One and the last being Form Five. But there are several that starts from Form Four.
For those students that started from form 1, they can continue their studies in MRSM until form 5 either in the same college or transferring to another college. These students can only continue their studies in MRSM if they pass their Penilaian Menengah Rendah with at least 6 A including Mathematics and Sciences. Whereas, they will be expelled from the system and continue their studies in ordinary school.
