Maktab

Maktab (mekteb, mektep, meqteb, maqtab), also called kuttab (Arabic: “school”), is an Arabic word meaning elementary schools for teaching children in Islamic subjects. Until the 20th century, boys were instructed in Quran recitations, reading, writing, and grammar in maktabs, which were the only means of mass education.
