[edit] History
This party came into existence immediately after Mr Sakthivel had written a Book on Globalisation – A Slave Economy in Sept 2005. Friends and well-wishers mostly consisting of Advocates who read the Book of Mr Sakthivel suggested that an awareness on creation of self-reliant India, opposing globalisation.
Therefore, for the purpose of creating awareness a forum under the name MAKKAL MANADU meaning people's conference was formed in Sept 2005 [1]and a number of meetings[2] held in various parts of Tamil Nadu.
It was realized that with a mere forum no effective awareness could be created among the people and it was only through a political platform an awareness could be created and could make people conscious of any subject that is being taken-up.
Therefore, the forum under the name of MAKKAL MANADU was converted into a political party on 3rd January 2006 at the meeting hall, Anand Theatre Complex, Anna Salai, Chennai[3]. Thereafter, the party formally gave an application for registration of the same as a political party with the Election Commission of India[4] and registered as a political party in the month of October 2006. [5]
The party will now march forward to see a new Nation free from clutches of poverty, unemployment and also freedom from want.
[edit] First Election Contest - May 2006
Elections to the Tamil Nadu State Assembly was announced in the month of May 2006 and the party decided to field candidates in four Assembly constituencies as an experiment.
The party decided to spend only Rs 10,000/-for each constituency, Though it is a peanut considering the expenditure incurred by the affluent political parties, being an experiment, the party restricted expenditure to a mere Rs 10,000/- Accordingly the party fielded candidates in Villivakkam [6], Aranthangi, Peravurani and Aarani. Mr Satishkumar, Advocate who contested from Villivakkam secured 2150 votes, Mr Ramanathan who contested from Aranthangi constituency secured 2400 votes. Mr Thirugnanam, Advocate who contested from Aarani secured 860 votes and Mr Raja who contested from Peravurani secured 1160 votes.
Considering the expenditure of other political parties, the votes secured by the MMK party candidates only shows that the people are open for alternate principled parties.
[edit] Second Election Contest - Oct 2007
The party contested in the Madurai west assembly bye elections. Mr. Suvichelvan a Post Graduate was the nominee of MMK for this election.
