[edit] History

Alfa Makedonikos BC (or Μακεδονικός K.A.E. in Greek) is a Greek professional basketball club. It competed in Greece's A1 League for years until going bankrupt in 2006 and being relegated to the third division of Greek professional basketball. Makedonikos was the runner up of the ULEB Cup competition in 2005. The ULEB Cup is the 3rd highest professional basketball league in the world after the NBA and the Euroleague. The club was founded in the year 1928.

Makedonikos won the A2 Ethniki, which is the second division of the professional Greek basketball league in the years 2000 and 2002. During the 2001-02 season the team set the A2 season record for most wins with 24. The club's parent sports club is Makedonikos.

[edit] Naming

Makedonikos means Macedonian in Greek.

[edit] Home City

Since its foundation Makedonikos' home city was Thessaloniki, Greece. Otherwise, when the team was bought by Dimitris Mesaikos, the franchise was moved to Kozani, Greece for a short period to play in a newer, larger arena that had just opened there.
