[edit] Plot summary
The novels protagonist is Alan Groombridge, a bank manager bored with his dull wife and with his tedious life. The thing which keeps Alan going is a fantasy of one day stealing enough of the bank's money to afford himself a life of complete freedom for a year. One day, when the bank is robbed at gun-point, Alan sees this an opportunity to make his fantasy happen, with dire consequences.
