Makaryev (Russian: Мака́рьев) is a town in Kostroma Oblast, Russia, located on the right bank of the Unzha River (Volga's tributary), some 180 km east of Kostroma. Population: 7,600 (2005 est.); 7,847 (2002 Census)
Makaryev was founded in 1439 as a settlement around the Makaryevo-Unzhensky monastery. The town was previously called Makaryev-na-Unzhe to avoid confusing it with a settlement of the same name in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast.
