Mak

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mak traditional(麥), simplified(麦) is an English transliteration of the Chinese surname, (Pinyin: mài), based on its Cantonese pronunciation.

Because there are different ways to approximate its pronunciation, the surname mài can be Anglicized with different spellings. Mack, Mark, Mai, and Mac are transliterations of the same Chinese surname.

Mak is also a Dutch surname. There were two families of Maks originating in The Netherlands. One was a family of sail makers, the other a family of contractors (or brick layers).

Mak was the 39th most common chinese surname in the 1990 List of common Chinese surnames, but it is no longer in the top 100 list since 2006.
