Thrissur (Malayalam: തൃശു൪) is a city situated in the central part of Kerala state, India. It is the head quarters of Thrissur district. Thrissur, the cultural capital of Kerala, is well planned beautiful city built around the famous Vadakkunnathan Temple. Sakthan, besides being a strong ruler was a patron of the arts too and he decided to add to the beauty of Thrissur which had salubrious climate and excellent topography. He cleared the dense forest around the Vadakkunnathan Temple occupying the centre of the city and made a beautiful and extensive maidan, now called the Thekkinkad Maidan. He also created the infrastructure to make Thrissur the hub of commercial activity. Thrissur gets into the festivelmood right from mid-november till mid-may. For a tourist visiting the destinations, it is six long months of continuous extravaganza, where one can participate. Thrissur Pooram recognized as a major national festival and listed in the National Tourism Calendar for international tourists.

Thrissur serves as a capital city for a considerable portion of Central Kerala. This portion covers three districts, Thrissur, Palakkad and Malappuram. Most of the people in these 3 districts depend this city for commercial purposes as well as hospital needs. The Govt. Medical College in Thrissur was allotted for the need of the people in these districts. Now this city has two other private Medical Colleges also. Other than these three medical colleges, there are a number of multi speciality hospitals.
