[edit] A landslide victory for The JPS (aka RFA thanks)

Hey, Mailer diablo/Archive M, thank you so much for your vote and comments in my RfA, which passed with an overwhelming consensus of 95/2/2. I was very surprised and flattered that the community has entrusted me with these lovely new toys. I ripped open the box and started playing with them as soon as I got them, and I've already had the pleasure of deleting random nonsense/attacks/copyvios tonight.
If I ever do anything wrong, or can help in some way, please feel free to drop me a line on my talk page, and I will do my best to correct my mistake, or whatever...
Now, to that bottle of wine waiting for me...

[edit] May the Force be with you.

Dear Mailer diablo/Archive M,

Thanks for voting on my RFA! I appreciate your faith in me, and was overwhelmed by the positive response to my RFA; for it shows that at least I'm doing something right. :) I've started working to improve myself already, and I hope that next time, things run better, and maybe, just maybe, one day we can bask on the shores of Admintopia together. Thanks and cheers, _-M o P-_ 21:44, 3 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Closing deletion debate

Hi, could you kindly close this deletion debate (related to this article)? The outcome of the deletion purpose was an almost unanimous keep. I would close it by myself, but it is suggested not--admin users not to close debates in which they were involved. Thank you very much. gala.martin (what?) 14:22, 4 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks for the support on my RfA!

Image:Danavecpurpletiger.jpg A belated thank you to you for Supporting my RFA! It passed 54/2/3, much better than I expected! I am still finding my feet as an Administrator, and so far I am enjoying the experience. I am honoured that you felt I was ready to take up this position, and wish to thank you formally! [edit] Chinese characters

Hi, Diablo, I need your help. A discussion at talk page Chinese characters lead to nowhere. The contributor, Yau, seemingly in his early teens or less, does not stick to Wikipedia conventions - adding comments to the top of the page, not the bottom, axing lots of data from the lead page, ignoring my comments that his English is not good enough to rewrite extensively the article. Also, he simply deleted away my comments from his personal talk page. Seems like he's not interested. Can you: 1) tell him that I'm using Wikipedia conventions; 2) convince him that simply deleting everybody's input is not the way to do things here? As an admin, you have more authority to do that. Thanks in advance. Mandel 11:25, 5 May 2006 (UTC)

sorry to upset mandel, no matter how old he is, by deleting his comments on my user page. I thought that he spread the same comments in too many pages and it would be a kind of spam. Please feel free to restore it if you insist that it's productive.
I also wish that Mandel would stop "retaliation" , not to remove any discussion on chinese characters again. As a veteran here, you should share the same good wishes of mine to keep Chinese characters immune from vandalism. --Yau 16:52, 5 May 2006 (UTC)
Yes, I don't think he did anything out of spite too, although he is assuming that on my behalf. When I moved his discussion to the bottom of the page, he thinks I'm vandalising, although I've explained myself hoarse what I was doing. Basically I think his input is not as good as the earlier editors. He must justify why he changed so much of the lead, and as he is planning a major overhaul of the page, you can be sure that will not be his last input. You may join in the debate, and if you side with me I will polite retract from the discussion. In fact, if you can guide him along, so much the better. Mandel 18:11, 5 May 2006 (UTC)
It seems on reading the Chinese Characters talk page that user Yau is not assuming good will on my part. He misunderstood me, when I explained myself many times that I am not against ethnic Chinese Wikipedians, even advising him to work with an ethnic Chinese Wikipedian with native-level fluency like User:Ran. What I hope is that his output will be written in good English. I am not trying to belittle his contributions here, but clearly here is a case where someone is assuming too much bad faith to listen objectively to what I have to say. Also, you can take a look at his output and compare it with the earlier versions, and offer him some advice. If he is willing to listen, I will retract from discussion. Mandel 18:21, 5 May 2006 (UTC)
Hi. I really don't have time to follow up on this case as this appears to be one protracted, time-consuming process to explain how Wikipedia works to a newbie. I cannot afford time to visit Wikipedia frequently. But I hate to see a page poorer when I leave it. Hence if you could give me some guarantee that you or Miborovsky would follow on the case (maybe by putting it on your watchpage), then I would be glad to leave this in good hands. Mandel 18:42, 5 May 2006 (UTC)
  • Mandel made a wrong assumption that as long as there's any grammatical mistake or typo error in a wiki page, he has the right to abolish all recent changes and revert to the original one. I've resisted to think Mandel is making vandalism on Chinese character, but he.... While he asked me to explain the recent changes, he deleted all my replies in the discussion page. The reason: The reply were not posted in an ascending order, although i also explained to him that why I wanted to move the discussion on major revision at the top of the page.
I've also explained to Mandel why I summarized the 8 paragraph long introduction, where the lost contents are/will be placed in a coming edition, but he chose not to discuss it, only keep deleting all recent changes. The reason for his move again is that there's a typo error (like "verify" was spelled as "vertify" and there's grammatical mistake like "namely the oldest surving writing system". Quite tired of it. --Yau 20:30, 5 May 2006 (UTC)
Urrghh, this is like the 4th time I telling him I did not delete his contributions. Luckily these are all documented. Please explain to him. 孺子不可教也﹗I give up. Mandel 20:42, 5 May 2006 (UTC)

  • It's 5am here, and I can't stay awake any longer. Please accept my apologies for the lack of response tonight, perhaps Miborovsky may help sort out the dispute if he happens to be online now. I'll come back to this tomorrow if I have the time. - Best regards, Mailer Diablo 20:47, 5 May 2006 (UTC)
  • You've done much more than a voluntary job. Thanks for your concern on this. Miborovsky may be out for holidays, but i'll be waiting him back. Thanks for your time --Yau 20:52, 5 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Jinyong

Oh man, he did the same to the Jinyong article. Every single one of his edits are for the worse. That article was my baby...man...please tutor him quickly before he does further damage. Mandel 20:28, 5 May 2006 (UTC)

OMG.... The main deletion in Jinyong's page is ''he has a widespread, unchallenged{{fact}}, almost religious{{fact}}.''
The citation were asked for a month, but as we can't see anyone to make it, my fellow and I replaced this personal comment with the estimated figure on the circulation of his books, and a common quotation in chinese community.
I think you're going too far now. The edit on Jinyong was made before and at that time, i even don't know your existence. I hope that you don't assume that i made an edit war on your page. And you seems to exaggerate the negative effect of grammatical errors. Thanks for your concern, but i expect more productive discussion. --Yau 20:43, 5 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Pourhashemi sisters & Belgium embassy girls

Hi, I noticed you closed the AfD on Belgium embassy girls. During the discussion someone created a duplicate, Pourhashemi sisters. On that page the deletion template, linking to the same AFD, is still there. Obviously one of these articles should be made into a redirect, but I'm not sure which one: Pourhashemi sisters is the better name, but Belgium embassy girls has the page history. Ideally, an admin would delete Pourhashemi sisters and after that Belgium embassy girls can be moved there. Could you? David Sneek 12:39, 6 May 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your reply. I boldly moved the article to another title that was suggested during the AfD, Yasmine and Sara Pourhashemi, and redirected Pourhashemi sisters there. David Sneek 08:50, 7 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #3

The Administrator Coaching program is a program aimed at preparing Wikipedians for Adminship or helping them understand the intricacies of Wikipedia better. Recently, changes have been made to the requirements of coachees. Please review them before requesting this service.
This would be something like the Welcoming Committee, but for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. Some might like suggestions about how to learn vandal patrol, or mentoring on taking an article to featured status, or guidance with a proposal they plan to make at the Village Pump, for example. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.
Stressbusters
The Stressbusters are a subset of Esperanza aiming to investigate the causes of stress. New eyes on the situation are always welcome!
Note from the editor
As always, MiszaBot handled this delivery. Thank you! Also, congratulations go to Pschemp, Titoxd and Freakofnurture for being elected in the last elections! An Esperanzial May to all of the readership!
  1. Posting logs of the Esperanza IRC channel are explicitly banned anywhere. Violation of this rule results in deletion and a ban from the channel.
  2. A disclaimer is going to be added to the Esperanza main page. We are humans and, as such, are imperfect.
  3. Various revisions have been made to the Code of Conduct. Please see them, as the proposal is ready to be ratified by the community and enacted. All members will members to have to re-confirm their membership after accepting the Code of Conduct.
  4. Referendums are to be held on whether terms of AC members should be lengthened and whether we should abolish votes full stop.
  5. Admin Coaching reform is agreed upon.

[edit] Superdon

The name is mentioned by Andrew Marr in 'My Trade'- his book on Journalism- a fact that i cited at the bottom of the page. Any chance of restoring it, or am i goingtohave to re-write it? Pydos 14:59, 8 May 2006 (UTC)

Yes, sorry, i was asking if you help me do it. I felt it was better to couch it in a soft way. Sorry for the ambiguity. Pydos 15:05, 8 May 2006 (UTC)
It was called 'Superdon'- just one word, and capitalized as shown left - i.e. Superdon. Pydos 15:29, 8 May 2006 (UTC)
Ok, now restored to the wikiverse. Many thanks. Pydos 15:55, 8 May 2006 (UTC)

Hi! Can I ask exactly why this article was recreated? The debate was I think clear for deletion. The only evidence offered is that one journalist used the word once in a book. It is not a term in general or recognised use in any way. That was the essence of the debate. I would be grateful for an explanation or justification. --Smerus 18:14, 8 May 2006 (UTC)

Many thanks for re-deletion - --Smerus 15:30, 9 May 2006 (UTC)

Doh! If no-one tells me these things, i will make the odd mistake. Ah well i'l keep my copy of the page anyway. Thanks again. Pydos 15:36, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] IP from the same country

Hi Mailer_diablo, after having a very minor dispute with our fellows from a particular country, i've recently faced trouble. Not only have my symantec software notified me several hackers' attempt from that country, my talk page also has an anonymous message from there. (nova1.singnet.com.sg). Anonymous editing is also getting common in the article in dispute ((Chinese character). I hope it's just coincidence, but ...just wanna confirm if it's possible for other wikipedians (including admin) to see my IP? Sorry to take your time again. --Yau 20:15, 8 May 2006 (UTC)

Thanks Mailer, i feel better after hearing from you. Thx! :P --Yau 17:01, 9 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Query from new person

Hi, I added a couple of photos to the page on Dinas Bran. At the time I added there was a warning about copyright stuff to do with the text I presume. Now all of the disputed text is gone as well as my photos-can I re-add them? I took them myself so no copyright infringements!

Many thanks for your help.

[edit] Deletion of Socratic Club (University of Michigan)

Mailer,

I wanted to bring to your attention an editor who is recreating a page at Socratic Club (University of Michigan) despite the AfD vote to delete [1]. He even added a passage to the article itself stating that he disagrees with the vote and will readd the page again. I have nominated the page for Speedy Deletion, but I noted that there's a huge backlog in Speedy Deletion and hopes that you might be able to attend to the page and, if the editor continues to ignore the AfD, place an indefinite block on the article.

I appreciate your help. I find it a bit ironic that the Socratic Club, which claims to encourage debate, continues to ignore the results of one.

Thanks!

--Ataricodfish 01:39, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

Many thanks! --Ataricodfish 03:12, 10 May 2006 (UTC)
Mailer, sorry to trouble you again, but User:Joshblan is refusing to recognize the results of the AfD and is recreating the page under different names. He has just reopened the page as Socratic Club (UM). Can you block this page as well and offer some sort of warning to the editor, as this is becoming vandalism. Thank you. --Ataricodfish 13:56, 10 May 2006 (UTC)
Thanks again for your attention to this matter. I appreciate the help. --Ataricodfish 14:23, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

Good work on this. The user, in my view, needs to be gently convinced that he doesn't get to arbitrarily set notability standards and circumvent policy. All of the recreates should, in my view, be speeded as recreation of deleted material, and potentially protected if they keep getting recreated... To be nice one could userify one of them perhaps? ++Lar: t/c 14:27, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

I am tired of you Wikinistas trying to destroy what is a harmless, and very notable operation in the world of academia. You know just as well as I do that the so-called Notability rule is an imaginary social construct, designed only to stifle cultural advancement. Please cease your shameless attacks. --joshblan

I don't know exactly the processus of deletion on en:Wikipedia, so I don't know if another vote must be done, or if it can be deleted immediatly. Markadet fr 21:57, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Monicasdude closed

This arbitration case is closed.

Monicasdude is placed on standard civility parole for one year. If he makes any edits which are judged by an administrator to be uncivil, personal attacks, or assumptions of bad faith, then he may be blocked for a short time of up to one week for repeat offenses. Monicasdude is banned from making edits related to the deletion process (excepting obvious vandalism and copyright problems) for one year. This is to be interpreted broadly, and includes, but is not limited to, commenting on articles for deletion nominations and removals of nominations for proposed deletion and speedy deletion. He may be blocked for a short time of up to one week for repeat offenses. After 5 such blocks, the maximum block time is increased to a year.

Should Monicasdude violate any ban imposed by this decision he may be briefly blocked, up to a week for repeat offenses. After 5 such blocks, the maximum block time is increased to a year. All blocks to be logged at Wikipedia:Requests_for_arbitration/Monicasdude#Log_of_blocks_and_bans.

I would suggest a longer block on this vandal. This is the third time this IP has been blocked for the exact same behavior (adding nonsense to USA Network). Perhaps a longer block than 24 hours would finally ward him/her off. --Zpb52 01:25, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] AfD Still Open

The AfD at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Skyview High School (Thornton, Colorado) has been open since 4 May 2005. Should it have been closed by now? --Strothra 01:44, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

I think an unintended mistake was made here. The AFD was actually never listed. The subpage was created, but the backlinks (or lack thereof), indicated it was never included in the daily AFD page. This explains why it went so long without being closed. I request that you undelete the page, and either start a new AFD, or re-open the old one. --Rob 05:33, 13 May 2006 (UTC)
Thanks a bunch. --Rob 05:48, 13 May 2006 (UTC)
Are you sure that it was never listed? I remember seeing the AfD and noticing that it was not listed on the AfD page. I thought that I had taken the liberty to list it but it may have been a day or so after individuals had begun voting on it. Either way, it seems that it's bringing about new discussion anyway. --Strothra 14:46, 13 May 2006 (UTC)
Strothra, it turns out, you did list it here, but then later it was removed by User:ThNik, who created the article, and is apparently blocked now. --Rob 15:41, 13 May 2006 (UTC)
