Citing Books and Newspaper Articles that Aren't On-Line

Happy New Years to you as well, Maikeli. Glad to hear that my advice has been helpful. Regarding your question as to whether or not offline sources such as books and newspaper articles are acceptable sources, yes they are. There are two ways to go about citing them in an article, both are laid out at WP:CITE which is a very helpful guideline for this topic. I'll summarize how to do it for you, though. When you are citing something in the article, such as a particular sentence or paragraph, you need to place the cite at the end of that sentence or paragraph. This is done by typing the following code WITHOUT the space in it (I'm including a space because otherwise the code wouldn't show up in writing here but would actually come up as a cite). Type a typical biliographic entry (Author. Book or Article Title. City of Publication: Publisher, Year of Copywright) in between a < ref> and < /ref> tag, without the spaces between the < and the rest of that tag. When you save the page the bibliographic info will appear at the bottom of the page and will be linked to by a small number at the end of the sentence where you placed the tag.

The second way to cite, which is better for more generalized references, is to actually ad a references section to the article as you would any other subsection. Just give the subsection the title of 'References' and type out the bibliographic information in that section without the above mentioned tags. Hope that helps. If not, do check out WP:CITE as it has a wealth of information about doing this. --The Way 19:41, 1 January 2007 (UTC)

Why don't we continue as planned. Get your documentation scanned and let's go from there. I think that there are ways that we can get your work published if the documentation is adequate.

Your articles

Just letting you know that the decision of the AFD vote was to delete Turaga na Rasau, Turaga na Ravunisa, Keni Naulumatua, Keni Naulumatua II, and Mere Tuisalalo pending sourcing.

In practical terms, that means that if and when you can get a credible source to cite, as you have been planning, just let me (or any other administrator) know, and we'll restore the relevant articles. (They're still in the system, accessible only to administrators). David Cannon 09:58, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

Your latest edits

Your latest edits are much better than before. Just one suggestion, though: for a small price, you can buy a program called ASUTYPE, which corrects your spelling as you go, removing superfluous capitals, etc. You can get if from http://www.asutype.com Anyway, if your future edits are on a par with these latest ones, I'll be pleased. Bula Vinaka tale yani, appreciate if you could get my username correct --Xorkl000 10:31, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

I am sticking around, I hope dispite your dislike for me that we are able to be civil while contributing on wikipedia, I love Fiji and Fiji history of particular interest is the area of Lomaloma Tikina, I will in future ensure I abide by the rules of Wikipedia, because if I Don't you'll be right there to point it out.

WP:CIVIL is an important rule, but my view is that if it does not serve any useful purpose if its prevents us from making full disclosure of all the baggage we bring here. Otherwise it makes us dishonest. I promise to be more civil, but I will not be dishonest. --Xorkl000 10:31, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

I'd rather not make enemies but try and work with you to help contribute constructively to Fiji related articles, I hope you can find it in you to put aside your past opinions of me and allow me to prove to you that I can show some signs of intelligence and contribute meaningfully to Wikipedia.

I remain unconvinced, but as the book says "every tree is known by his own fruit", and thats how all of of us will be judged here. I will note that your work is already improving --Xorkl000 10:31, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

Happy New Year

Vunivalu of Bau

Bula Maikeli, I've noticed your work (and arguments haha!) and have decided to join the fray of articles going around regarding Fiji. While my area of interest is Rotuma in particular, I've recently noticed some gaps that I thought should be filled. If you look at my contributions I've recently spent some time writing articles about the various Vunivalu of Bau, mainly writing from text sources by Sam Berwick. I realise that this is a little one sided so invite your critiques.

Firstly though I must tell you that I hope you don't feel too disheartened by our disagreements with Xorkl000 and continue to work to bring new information (cited, not new research of course) to this great resource called wikipedia.

I bring the following to you because i realise your knowledge of fijian nobles is probably much greater than my own. I noticed that for the table on the Vunivalu of Bau page, there are no listed Vunivalu between Penaia Kadavulevu and George Cakobau. Would it be so presumptuous that I should not include in the list Ratu Popi Seniloli, g/son of the Tui Viti Cakobau, which in my book is listed as the next Vunivalu after his cousin Penaia and/or list his supposed successor Tevita Naulivou (elder brother of George Cakobau).

I realise the contentiousness of this, considering Popi is seemingly quite low in terms of order of precedence to have inherited the Vunivalu from his cousin, when he (Popi) was the son of Cakobau's 3rd son Joseva Celua. However, unless Popi inherited the Vunivalu, neither would have George Cakobau, the last Vunivalu listed and Popi's son. Please give me your thoughts on the matter. Hello!

Hi there! Yes, I think covering Fiji's religion, right back from pre-Christian times, is an excellent idea! It will be good to see your work, Maikeli, and I'll help you with the formatting, crosslinking, and categorizing. Have a great day! David Cannon 11:34, 10 February 2007 (UTC)

Fiji Project

Hey I would like you to join two groups because of the work that you are doing. One is regarding Fiji Wikipedia:WikiProject Fiji and it is for all users who are helping to make articles on Fiji and its history ,biodiversity ,culture and helping improve Fiji related articles and the other group is Wikipedia:WikiProject Fiji Rugby for all the big ardent rugby fans of Fiji and this group was created by me so that we could better improve articles related to Fiji Rugby because when I joined there was hardly any Fiji rugby related articles here and I along with a few other Wikipedians helped to improve them..Her are the templtes of both if you want to add them to your userpage..

Re: Thanks

Glad I could help in reverting the vandalism on Lomaloma. There's no real way of stopping people from writing silly profanities on an article as anyone can edit it. However, most such edits are promptly reverted and if people do it persistently they are warned and may be blocked for a period of time. This hopefully discourages them from doing it again. By the way, nice work on the articles. Keep it up! Will (aka Wimt) 08:21, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

vunivalu article

Vunivalu of Bau article had the following issues:

  • poorly written, bad grammar, extremely ponderous constructions
  • inaccurate - the overthrow of Visawaqa was not primarily as a result of rivalry between the Tui Kaba and the Roko Tui Bau, it was far more complex than that
  • Gave undue weight to Visawaqa and Cakobau, these two individuals already have articles
  • refences - the way you are citing them is incorrect and confusing, please read WP:CITE#HOW

Hi!

I'm looking at putting together a Wikipedia in the Rotuman Language for the sake of the preservation of the language in the years to come, as the diaspora continues. Noa'ia Maikeli, and vinaka saka vakalevu for your vote of support for Wikipedia Rotuma. This is another momentous step towards an important rotuman language resource.
Might I also make mention of the Na-Vosa Vaka-Viti Wikipedia here which is in desperate need of some love and attention. I don't know whether or not you speak Fijian, but I assure you that your enthusiasm for Fijian culture and history wouldn't go astray on that site. Check it out!

Waisale Serevi

Hi, I'm a member of the WikiProject Rugby Union Fiji Rugby Workgroup and have nominated Waisale Serevi as an FAC. There has been very little feedback given so far, and I was hoping you could add some of yours to the candidate's page here. The article was nominated over ten days ago and any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much. - Shudda talk 03:23, 27 April 2007 (UTC)

Ratu Sukuna of Bau or Lakeba or both?

someone edited Tovata removing Ratu Sukuna saying that he is from BAU but his mother is from LAU, which is correct but I put his name back on Notable Fijians from Tovata, giving the reason on the talk page that while Ratu Sukuna was Kai Bau But Vasu Levu to Lakeba he held a signifcant Chiefly title within Tovata being that of the Tui Lau so thats why he is considered as a Notable person of Tovata, but he would share Notability in both Tovata and Kubuna but he should not be removed from Tovata, I needed an independant view and that is why I am consulting you was I incorrect in reverting the edit to keep Ratu Sukuna on the Tovata section? your advice would be helpful on this matter.

Its true that the Turaga Talai's father was from Bau (Ratu Joni Madraiwiwi. The story i've heard (also confirmed in Derrick Scarr's book) is that Ratu Sukuna had his and his siblings names removed from his father's clan and had them transferred to his mother's clan in Lakeba. Given that he was running the NLC at the time this sort of fiddling with the VKB was quite easy for him to do. The origin of this move was apparently a series of disputes with his Tui Kaba cousins over various issues.
The descendants of one the Turaga Talai's brothers live up the road from me. They are all written in Lakeba as part of the Vuanirewa, and if you ask them where they are from they'll say that they are from Lakeba, Lau.
So what does this mean? Fijian descent is primarily patrilineal, you are from where your father is from. But there are always exceptions though, and there are many examples of people being written in their mother's village. By all accounts Ratu Sukuna considered himself to be Lauan, and so did his siblings (except of course for Ratu Dovi, who was adopted into the yavusaratu and thus became Bauan again). Also as you note, he was given a Lauan chiefly title.
In summary i think we should revert the article at Tovata Confederacy back to previous one at &oldid=128327960. The current version says "was Vasu Levu to Tovata" which is very awkward sounding and also might beinaccurate. I think your mother would have to be from the Ai Sokula in Taveuni to be a Vasulevu to Tovata. In any case i have never heard of anyone being called vasulevu to an entire confederacy.
I will dig up Derrick Scarr's book for the reference to Ratu Sukuna moving his registration to Lakeba and share it with you all as soon as I have time. --Xorkl000 02:24, 5 May 2007 (UTC)

Grateful

Vinaka vaka levu saka User:Xorkl000 I meant to say Vasu Levu to Lakeba, but yes I agree we should just revert it to &oldid=128327960 as you advised, only thing I am not sure how to do this? anyway I will try you can check just in case I get it wrong.

Commercial use of Image:Vanuabalavu.GIF

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Image:Vanuabalavu.GIF, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Image:Vanuabalavu.GIF is an image licensed as "for non-commercial use only" or "used with permission for use on Wikipedia only" which was either uploaded on or after 2005-05-19 or is not used in any articles (CSD I3).

Hi again! I noticed that you created Template:Maikeli to present information about yourself. Personal user/editor information should generally be restricted to the user namespace and should not carry over into the encyclopedia itself. So, would you please subst the template and then tag it for deletion with {{db-author}}? Substing will copy the text of the template to your userpage. To subst the template, simply edit your userpage, replace the text {{Template:Maikeli}} with {{subst:Maikeli}}, and save the page. Feel free to contact me if you have any comments or questions. Fiji Scouts Association

Can you please help render "Fiji Scouts Association" as well as "Be Prepared", the Scout Motto, into Fijian? Thanks! Chris 03:41, 13 August 2007 (UTC)

Bula Chris good question as for "be prepared" a possible Translation is "Vaka Vakarau" but check this with other wikipedians from Fijian to help you get a more accurate translation as for the "Fiji Scouts Association" I will try ring them and ask for the correct term as I would have to find an equivalent for Scout, I will touch base shortly, Vinaka. Maikeli MB 02:40, 15 August 2007 (UTC)
Bula once again Chris the term most agreeable with some senior scouts whom I just discussed the issue with was for the Motto "be prepared always" would be "Tu Vakarau ena Vei Gauna" and for the "Fiji Scouts Association" would be "Nai Soqosoqo ni taba Gone e Viti" double check this with User:Xorkl000 and a few other Fijian Wikipedians, I hope that helps, Vinaka, Maikeli MB 02:57, 15 August 2007 (UTC)
I think I'll refrain from weighing in here as I'm not qualified - I know nothing about scouting in Fiji or in any other country. "Tu vakaraua ena veigauna" is a good translation, probably better than my suggestion of "Meda tu vakarau" which is more like "We should be prepared"
My final point is that Nai Soqosoqo ni taba Gone e Viti back-translates as "Fiji Youth Association" which doesn't really specifically reference Scouting, but like I said I don't really know much about the topic and whether this name is the official Fijian name of the organisation --Xorkl000 08:36, 16 August 2007 (UTC)
Thank you so much! If you would like to invite your friends to edit, both Fiji Girl Guides Association and Fiji Scouts Association are really stubs and could use the assistance of someone who really knows what's going on there! Thank you again! Chris 01:06, 16 August 2007 (UTC)

The Article East Fijian languages, West Fijian languages and related dialects of the Fijian Language I think should be merged with the Article Fijian Languages as really they discuss variations of the same topic and these other Language articles on the Fijian language are just small stubs and perhaps the Fijian language article should be changed to just "Language in Fiji" and cover all related languages in the Fiji Islands. feedback and thoughts on this matter. Your help

What I left on Xorkl000s and David Cannon talk page:

Bula Xorkl000 and David I need your feed back yet again, there was an internal link on the ethnic groups section of the Fiji Article I removed it because it lead to an article on racial segregation which I felt was inappropriate, I don't feel racial segregation correctly describes Fiji's situation, also on the racial segregation article there was a section on Fiji which seemed very one sided I left this comment on the talk page:

The section on Fiji is very one sided and does not give the reader an overall picture further more it is unreferenced an unsourced and I believe should be re written, there is evidence of defacto separation but not segregation the Fiji section should be removed or as I said before rewritten as it is divisive and incorrectly written..Vinaka MB 04:31, 28 September 2007 (UTC) I have rewritten part of the Fiji section but I am still not certain that it even belongs on this page anyone ones thought on the subject would be helpful. Vinaka Maikeli MB 21:02, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

I also made a little edit to the article in the Fiji section to try and give a more balanced view but I still think it should be taken out of the article all together Fiji has some instances of racial difference or defacto separation but it also has evidence of unity to, take alook at the article and give your thoughts. Vinaka MB 21:17, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

Complexity

retrieved from LghTalk page:

Thanks for your edits which greatly helped the article on Fijian traditions and ceremonies, there were one or two minor points which I changed back however 90% of your edits I left as were correct just regarding your comments on the talk page:

This article is too complex. I have started eliminating the redundancy but it needs some major editing as such.Lgh 22:03, 29 September 2007 (UTC)

You should bear in mind that Fiji Traditions and ceremony is complex however the article is a general overview designed to give the first time reader a true picture of Fijian Tradition and ceremony as it exists today some Major editing was done by the League of Copy editors, however its format still needs a little work though, thanks for your input on the article, please continue to edit to help make it a better encyclopedia article you may also want to help with the Religion in Fiji article Vinaka Maikeli MB 01:03, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

retrieved from South Sea Islander talk page:

Bula South Sea Islander it's good to have you on Wikipedia, your edits to Culture of Fiji were very good and helped improve the quality of the article making it a better encyclopedia article, however your entire deletion of the Identity section was not helpful! what should happen is for you to add to help make it a better encyclopedia article do not delete entire section with out good cause, please place some of your details on the user page as it seems you have good knowledge and understanding that could help improve Fiji Articles, once again welcome and keep up the constructive editing Vinaka, Maikeli MB 01:31, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

Surely as editors we should aim for economic prose and attractive layout. I still feel the article needs serious editing down by someone more quailifed than myself in matters Fijian. It would probably suffice to say something like: 'the yaqona ceremony is highly complex, and includes ceremonial mixing of the drink and presentation of the bilo cup to various people in order of rank, with appropriate verbal responses made at each stage of the process.' And leave it at that. The average reader is not going to remember or want to remember half of what is currently written there, while the expert or student reader will look further into the matter and get definitive references. Lgh.

I am in Agreement but we must bear in mind that the Yaqona ceremony has large social importance in Fiji and as long as that is conveyed in some way I suppose we should reduce the content on that section as I am too close to the article because I wrote it I feel my judgment is not the best as I have an emotional attachment, a good Editor with experience on the subject as well structure and format of articles would be Xorkl000, so run it by him and you'll get a fair and accurate response on what to change.
