[edit] History
Maitland High School opened in 1884 with John Waterhouse MA as the first Headmaster, and was originally called Maitland Boys High, with its sister school being Maitland Girl's High (now Maitland Grossman High). In 2007, the school had an enrollment of 871 students. The school colours are black and white, and it's mascot is a magpie. The school houses were originally Scobie, Hughes, Waddy, Portus, MacMullen and Fraiser, now reduced to Scobie-Hughes (red), Waddy-Portus (blue), MacMullen (yellow) and Fraiser (green). It has a building once used as a boarding house for students who lived a fair distance, but it now houses the library. It is the second oldest high school in the state. One of its former Science faculty head teachers was briefly employed by NASA. The school was used as an evacuation centre during the 2007 flooding of the Hunter River. There is also the Maitland High Old Boys and Ex-students Union, which regularly assists the school with donations and scholarships for students.
