A Maison chartreuse (from French, literally translated as Carthusian house) is a building or complex of buildings used as a monastery for the Carthusian Order. Probably the most famous (former) maison chartreuse in the English-speaking world is the London Charterhouse. Many maisons chartreuses are built to suit the special needs of the Carthusian monks, who lead a life of almost total seclusion from the outside world.
