Mainbrace was a champion thoroughbred racehorse who won 23 out of 25 career races and was placed second in the other two. He is regarded as one of the greatest horses to have ever raced in New Zealand.
Included among his wins are the Great Northern Derby, New Zealand St. Leger, Great Northern Foal Stakes, Royal Stakes, Champagne Stakes, Great Northern Guineas, Wellington Guineas, Foxbridge Plate, King's Plate, Wellington Stakes, Gloaming Stakes, Trentham Stakes and the Awapuni Gold Cup.
He was retired to stud in 1953.
