Maighread Ní Dhomhnaill
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Maighread Ní Dhomhnaill (pronounced [ˈmaiɾʲəd̪ˠ nʲiː ˈɣoːn̪ˠəlʲ]; born 1951) is an Irish traditional singer from Ranafast, County Donegal and Kells, County Meath. She is generally regarded as one of Ireland's finest traditional singers, with extraordinary sales of 500,000 records, such massive sales are rare in the traditional music industry. Maighread first came to prominence as a member of the group Skara Brae. The other members of the group were Mícheál Ó Domhnaill (her brother), Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill (her sister) and Dáithí Sproule. The only recording that the group made still remains a classic. The songs on her solo albums are mostly sung in Irish. Mícheál and Triona accompanied her on the album "No Dowry". Her 1976 debut album was issued under the name "Mairead Ní Dhomhnaill", but since then she has changed the spelling of her first name to "Maighread".
Maighread is married to Cathal Goan, the director-general of Ireland's largest television corporation RTÉ.
