Maiden Newton railway station is a railway station serving the village of Maiden Newton in Dorset. The station is located on the Castle Cary-Weymouth "Heart of Wessex" line.

The station is served by First Great Western. Services originate from either Westbury or Bristol Temple Meads and are operated by Class 150 or Class 153 diesel multiple units. During the summer, some weekend trains are operated by Class 31 and Mk. 2 coaching stock hired from FM Rail.

[edit] History

Opened on 20 January 1857, by the Wilts, Somerset and Weymouth Railway, the station consisted of two platforms and a branch bay, a flint station building and goods shed, and a signal box. The station building and goods shed survive in private hands. Although the signal box was closed and demolished during a rationalisation scheme the station retains two platforms as it is a passing place on the single line between Dorchester and Yeovil.

From 1857 to 1975 the station was the junction for the Bridport Railway and the former bay platform and trackbed can still be seen at the west end of the station.
