Mai Shanley

Mai Therese Shanley (born c. 1963), Miss New Mexico USA, Miss USA 1984 is a former beauty queen. Her mother is ethnically Han Chinese and is from Taiwan, while her father is Irish[citation needed]. Her father was the Chief Master Sergeant of the U.S. Air Force.

Shanley's first pageant experience came when she represented New Mexico in the Miss America pageant in 1983. She did not place in that pageant.

Later, Shanley became the first Eurasian delegate to win Miss USA. She was twenty-one at the time she was crowned the 33rd Winner at the pageant held in Lakeland, Florida on May 17, 1984. She also edged out two former Miss America state titleholders in the top 5, Miss West Virginia 1982 Kelly Anderson and Miss Tennessee 1982 Desiree Denise Daniels who placed 2nd and 3rd respectively. Daniels was also 1st runner up in the Miss America 1982 pageant. Anderson was unplaced like Shanley in Miss America.

She went on to compete at the Miss Universe Pageant in Miami, FL where she was a semi-finalist.
