Mai is a minor character from the film version of Battle Royale, played by Ai Iwamura.

Mai is a student in Class 3-E at Zentsuji No. 4 Junior High School in Zentsuji, Kagawa Prefecture. Mai has long hair, has braces on her teeth, wearing a bloodstained sailor fuku, and clutching an equally bloodstained rag doll. Mai only appears for the very first scenes of the film; she is that year's Program winner.

In the opening scene, Mai sits in an army jeep while reporters crowd around, shouting details of the battle which has just finished. She looks up and smiles insanely. Mai's battle lasted for 2 days (3 days in novel), 7 hours, and 43 minutes.

Mai is based on a girl from the novel which Shuya Nanahara has accidentally seen on TV. The girl, a Zentsuji No. 4 Junior High School student, was exactly in the same position as Mai. When Shuya saw this update, it was the first time he learned about the Program. The same scene is shown during the first few pages of the first volume of the manga series.

Mai reappears in the film sequel Battle Royale II: Requiem and is a member of Wild Seven, a terrorist organization. Mai does also not play much part in the film. She appears twice; first, she appears in a brief scene to give another insane and sadistic smile. Later, in the last stand battle when the government troops are raiding the terrorist fortress, Mai can be seen packing explosives into her doll shortly after commandos punch a hole through the wall. She throws her bloodstained doll (which she still had at least four years after she was seen at the beginning of the first film) that contains an explosive device. It explodes killing the entry soldiers but she is shot at least twice while throwing it. The explosion throws her down on the floor, she can be heard screaming the whole time.
