This is a category for Maithili poets over the centuries. Maithili belongs to the Indo-Aryan languages, which are part of the Indo-Iranian branch of the Indo-European languages. Unlike Hindi which is a Centric Indic Language, Maithili is considered to be an Eastern Indic language. It is identified to be one of the parent languages of Hindi - the common language of India with a population of over a billion. Since 2003, Maithili is an official language in India. It was traditionally written in Mithilakshar. It is also written in Kaithi and Devnagari script.
