[edit] Views and Opinions

Excerpts from post-pageant interview.

What was your family's reaction to your decision to participate (in Miss Pakistan World)?

"My mother was really proud of me as she has always supported me in all my decisions. Some of my family members were not too fond of the idea but now after learning more about the industry through me, they too, are proud of me. I think this idea just needs time to sink into people's minds that Miss Pakistan World is actually all about patriotism, confidence and competition. Pakistani middle class families feel that it may not be right for their children to get exposed to such stardom as it can sway them away from studies. I am a graduate in business and have now started my own business. This is what I would like to prove to the community that we can balance all aspects of life."

How do you relate to your Pakistani heritage? What is the one thing you love about your culture?

"I am a proud Balouchi. When I think of my heritage, one word that immediately comes to mind is 'family'. Family and family values are very important to my heritage. After living in Canada for over a decade and being an independent woman I still hold my heritage of having a loving family and being strong. I am a very patriotic Pakistani when it comes to heritage." '

[edit] International Pageant

Mahleej Sarkari took part in the Miss Tourism Queen International pageant held in Zhengzhou, China in April 2008. She became the first Miss Pakistan World to be predicted[citation needed] to place in the top 20 out of 120 countries. This marked a giant step for Pakistan, gaining recognition and showing greater force each year. Sarkari also won 2nd Runner-up for the Miss Disco[citation needed] title at the Miss Tourism Queen International 2008 pageant. This was the 4th title achieved at the same pageant by the Miss Pakistan World organization.

[edit] Controversy

Mahleej Sarkari made headlines when she proclaimed her admiration for Pakistani President, Pervez Musharraf[citation needed] in the aftermath of her trip to China. In interviews with AAJ TAK and Headlines Today in India, Sarkari said that she loved Pakistan's president and subsequently said that she would be happy to date him[citation needed] if the opportunity was ever to present itself.

Sarkari was not the first person to claim her love and respect for Musharraf. Both Aishwarya Rai[citation needed] and Rani Mukerjee[citation needed] have shown their support and high regard for the President of Pakistan. Musharraf is a strong sign of liberation and progression for the women of Pakistan and other delegates at Miss Tourism Queen International such as Miss Jamaica and Miss El Salvador blew kisses[citation needed] at a Musharraf poster for his support of the entertainment and beauty industry.

In an interview of India's leading newspaper, Times of India, Sarkari said, "A little note to the people of Pakistan: Going to international pageants we have found out how much Musharraf is known to all beautiful young girls, the beauty queens. Some have replied, 'Oh yes, the general man'. While others have said 'the man who rules Pakistan'.", wrote Sarkari.[citation needed]

Excerpts from news coverage:

"Everything positive...I think personally Musharraf Sahab is very good-looking. Some Pakistani politicians may not agree with these gorgeous women. But here they are kissing Musharraf."

"You know like Benazir, all men around the world thought she was a beauty, similarly Musharraf is a hunk. He has enough charisma to have young girls going nuts."

Sarkari said she would love to date Musharraf if he asked her out. "Yes, any time. I like him a lot." she told a news portal.

Sarkari also said she thought "Mrs. Musharraf would nod her head in agreement that her husband is an icon no matter what happens".

The headlines for this story are: "Musharraf is a hunk, says Miss Pakistan World" "Musharraf the Hunk" "Pakistan's President has a surprising fan" "I want to date Musharraf."
