[edit] Speedy deletion of Big Doe Camp
A tag has been placed on Big Doe Camp requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}}
to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. Plrk (talk) 17:36, 21 May 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Big Doe Camp
I see this was deleted. If you want to create an article about it, first read our notability criteria, which it will need to pass. After all, this is an encyclopedia, not a blog, or a memories website. --Dweller (talk) 18:53, 21 May 2008 (UTC)
- I read your hangon argument. It was not sufficient to meet the standards here at wikipedia. For the camp to have an article,. you will need independant coverage from a 3rd party. Your article provided none of that, and assuming that none exists, the camp is no different than thousands and thousands of camps throughout the world. If you can find a reliable source showing the camp is notable, I will galdly undelete it. Chrislk02 Chris Kreider 19:49, 21 May 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Magnetawan River
Hello! I noticed that you added the Rivers Project banner to the Magnetawan River page. These banners actually belong on the talk pages; in this case, Talk:Magnetawan River. There was already such a banner there, but no assessment nor a map request, so I made sure that your assessment and the map request made the switch. Cheerio and happy editing! [edit] RCC
Hey thanks for your support vote. Just wondering how you found the page? Also, I was considering placing a picture of myself and my son on my user page with some halibut we caught last summer in Alaska. We have a cabin up there and spend a bit of time being "naturalists" too on a remote island off Kodiak. I was going to add some pics to the Kodiak AK page the next time we go (and come back - there is no electricity where we are). NancyHeise (talk) 20:21, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
- I found it while just browsing through Wikipedia. I visited the Vatican in march during Holy week and was lucky enough to get tickets to three Papal audiences that week. Making it a featured article would be a great way to help promote the RCC! --Magnetawan (talk) 20:33, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Saving Big Doe Camp
Hello! I hope I am not intruding, but I hope I can offer you a tip on saving your article on Big Doe Camp. First, contact an admin who can resurrect and preserve the deleted article (I would recommend this friendly guy, who has done that for me: [1]). Once you have the article saved in a secure setting, then start working on expanding it with sources and references that will stand up to scrutiny. If you want an extra set of hands, let me know and I can be of assistance. I hope this is helpful. Ecoleetage (talk) 12:58, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks so much for your help. I will contact the friendly guy you mentioned. a couple of other admins have not been of any help. Magnetawan (talk) 13:30, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] RE: Big Doe Camp
The article was deleted because it didn't show enough notability according to guidelines. Per WP:CORP, "A company, corporation, organization, team, religion, group, product, or service is notable if it has been the subject of coverage in secondary sources. Such sources must be reliable, and independent of the subject. The depth of coverage of the subject by the source must be considered. If the depth of coverage is not substantial, then multiple independent sources should be cited to establish notability. Trivial or incidental coverage of a subject by secondary sources is not sufficient to establish notability." The sources you had in the article were far from extensive; aside from the one Toronto Star mention (which can't be considered a source because it was written sixty years ago), the other two links featured only minor mentions. You need extensive secondary coverage to justify having an article. Hope that helps, Master of Puppets Call me MoP! :) 02:21, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
- The age of a newspaper article does not deem it invalid. Historical articles are not going to be in recent news because they are just that a Piece of History so events would have taken place years ago. Notability is also not determined by Fame or Importance. Whether or not you thought the sources were good. Yes the other links had minor mentions but the other two links stated at the begining of the long page that a large collection of materials was archived for the organizations listed. The archives do not provide all the information online but let you know that the information archived hence being an archive. This was a small camp, not a large famous on. "Large organizations are likely to have more readily available verifiable information from reliable sources that provide evidence of notability; however, smaller organizations can be notable, just as individuals can be notable, and arbitrary standards should not be used to create a bias favoring larger organizations."(Per WP:CORP ) Further "A company, corporation, organization, team, religion, group, product, or service is notable if it has been the subject of coverage in secondary sources" That does not state the amount of coverage or say extensive coverage in secondary sources, as would not be avaiable in smaller organizations. It simply says once it has been the subject of secondary sources. The article I posted had just that and was the subject of secondary sources. I may need extensive coverage, but that would be for AFD, this article was not criteria for Speedy. Your a little to quick on the delete button. Magnetawan (talk) 09:31, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
- Unless I am misreading this part of WP:RS ([2]), it would appear that Magnetawan is correct. I am unaware of any specific policy that says news coverage prior to X-date is deemed unreliable. The Toronto Star coverage would appear to be reliable, whether it came from last week, last year, or last century. Ecoleetage (talk) 13:02, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
- I just read the piece. I might recommend editing the article down -- some of it reads like an advertisement, particularly the song (though I must say that I love to insert musical numbers into my own writing, particularly Portuguese fado numbers). As for editing, I can give it a go, if you wish. I would also double check if CampChannel.com is a reliable source. The other sources seem fine to me. Let me know. Thanks! - Oh, that is nice of him. Okay, I will get to it. Thanks! Ecoleetage (talk) 15:58, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

- Question: what year did the camp begin operations, and when did it cease? Ecoleetage (talk) 19:11, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

PS I emailed a suggested edited version of the article to you. I know this means a great deal for you and I didn't want to chop away anything without first getting your input. Thanks! Ecoleetage (talk) 22:03, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
Not a bother. Take care of real life. The Wiki world will be here when you get back! :) Ecoleetage (talk) 22:44, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Hi!
Hi Magnetawan, just dropping by to say - great user name! I'm sitting here flooded with memories of my childhood in the 60's/70's at the cottage on Sand Lake (just past Kearney, we were the 2nd last cottage at the very end of the road around the lake). Picking blueberries, the regatta and the skeet shooting, sunburns and fly bites (oh so many fly bites :), boating down and canoeing up the Mag. Thanks for the mental nudge, if I can help you out around here, let me know. :) Franamax (talk) 23:26, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
- Sounds great, Yes I know exactly where Sand Lake is located on the Magnetawan River. Your more than welcome to help out with anything you feel you may be able to contribute to. You can see a list of the articles I have created, have contributed to, or plan on adding to or creating on my user page. All input is welcome, feel free to add any of your knowledge and other information you may have from other sources. Any way you can enhance any of the articles would be greatly appreciated. And yes this is exactly what my user name is named after. I've spent many a summer canoeing the mag and continue to do so every year. Magnetawan (talk) 23:40, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
- I'll add Sand Lake to my list of articles to create. I should start the article sometime in the next week. Magnetawan (talk) 23:43, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Word out of Big Doe Camp?
Hey, how is your article progressing? :) Ecoleetage (talk) 18:30, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
- the article is doing fine. I've implemented many of your changes though it may not appear that way as I don't want to axe large amount of information. I like having as much information there as possible. thanks for your help but i don't want to cut out any of the information. i keep looking at it and slowly making more and more changes. with time it will continue to improve.
