Magog, Quebec
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Magog is a small city in southeastern Quebec, Canada, about 140 kilometers east of Montreal at the confluence of Lake Memphremagog, with the Rivière aux Cerises and the Magog River in the Regional County Municipality of Memphremagog. In 2002 the City of Magog was merged with the Township of Magog and the Village of Omerville as part of the municipal reorganization in Quebec.
For several generations it was a one-industry textile manufacturing town, where Texmade linens were produced. While the main plant is still there, Magog has become the centre of a resort area, with shops and services catering to vacationers and tourists. Magog is now at cross-roads with many local industries relocating themselves or simply closing due to the absence of contracts. Tourism related to the lake and the Orford mountain drives the region industry.
According to the 2006 Statistics Canada Census, the population of Magog is 23,880, up from an 22,474 (adjusted for the 2002 boundary change) in 2001.
