The Magnificent Mile Lights Festival is the first holiday festival of the United States of America, taking place annually the Saturday before Thanksgiving along Chicago's Magnificent Mile.[citation needed] Festival activities include family-friendly live stage shows, the Christkindlmarket, street entertainment and the illumination of more than one million lights on two hundred trees along North Michigan Avenue, from Oak Street to Wacker Drive. Mickey Mouse, as the master of ceremonies, illuminates the lights block by block with the help of thousands of guests in attendance. After the lighting procession, shopping hours are extended to start the holiday season. The Lights Festival has been a popular event since it began in 1991.
