Magnet Networks

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Magnet Networks is an Irish company providing telephone, television and internet services.

Magnet Networks is a wholly owned subsidiary of US-based international investment company Columbia Ventures Corporation (CVC), and a partner of Industria, a Nordic total broadband solutions provider and systems integrator.

Magnet Network offers communications and entertainment services, by subscription through fibre-optic cable. Services are accessed through a digital gateway box installed in the home.

While claiming to be "digital television", with the exception of an EPG, which is unreliable, none of the extra features associated with digital television, e.g. digital teletext or reminders for programmes, are available. The only stations with analogue teletext are RTÉ and TV3.[citation needed]

Services on offer include digital telephony, multi-channel digital TV, video-on-demand, broadband Internet.

Magnet Network claims its fibre-optic cable will enable it to cater to new developments in digital technology using its existing infrastructure.

Magnet Networks, together with Industria, employs 150 staff at its headquarters in Dublin (undated). The company launched its service in Dublin on December 1, 2004. It aims to expand its network by concluding partnerships with property developers and house builders in Dublin.

As Magnet has signed deals with these property developers and homebuilders, guaranteeing that no other service providers can operate in several new developments, customers are denied a choice and many have reported being unhappy with Magnet cannot yet change to Sky or NTL
