Magna Carta (Italy)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Magna Carta is a political party faction and think tank within Forza Italia, a centre-right political party in Italy.
The group tries to combine elements of liberalism with Catholic social teaching, supports the so-called "Judeo-Christian roots" of Europe, takes a strong pro-United States and pro-Israel stance in foreign policy, especially in relation to radical Islam and Islamic terrorism. For these reasons and also because of the left-wing roots of many of its member, the group is sometimes described the theoconservative and neoconservative faction within Forza Italia.
Its leading figure is Marcello Pera, former President of the Italian Senate and friend of Pope Benedict XVI, while Senator Gaetano Quagliariello is the current President. Among the MPs of the People of Freedom, Fiamma Nirenstein, Eugenia Roccella, Luigi Compagna, Souad Sbai, Giuseppe Caldersi, Alfredo Mantovano and Guido Possa are, at different extent, close to the foundation.
