Magiri
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Magiri (間切?) was a historical type of administrative district in Okinawa, Japan. In concept they were similar to present day Japanese prefectures, but in size they were closer to cities, towns and villages.
In the history of the Ryukyu Islands, the demarkation of magiri underwent two major modifications. The system also continued in varying amounts in the Amami Islands even after they were put under control of Satsuma province.
In 1907, under imperial edict 46, Okinawa was established as a prefecture and divided into cities, towns, and villages. The magiri system was abolished the following year.
