Magic Kaito (まじっく快斗 Majikku Kaito?) is a shōnen manga series by Gosho Aoyama.

A light-hearted manga about a thief named Kaitou Kid. Gosho Aoyama stopped work on the manga after three volumes due to the fact that he started Detective Conan (Case Closed), which was an instant hit. Chapters of the Magic Kaito manga have been released in Shōnen Sunday since then, and have only recently been collected into a fourth volume in February 2007.

Kaitou Kid, also makes appearances in Detective Conan (Case Closed). Kaitou Kid appears in volumes 16, 20, 30, 44, 46, 53 & 61 of the manga. He also appears in the Detective Conan movies 3, 8 and 10, and appears in a few of the Detective Conan anime episodes.

Kaitou Kid is a world-renowned thief who steals treasure and gems. He is sometimes known as the "Kaitou Kid" or "International Criminal # 1412." He was nick-named "Kid" when a journalist hastily scrawled "1412" and Booker (Yusaku) Kudo read it as "KID" (14 = KI, 12 = D)[1]. The Japanese word "Kaitou" means "mysterious phantom thief."

Now an internationally wanted criminal, the real Kaitou was originally the world famous magician Toichi Kuroba (黒羽 盗一 Kuroba Tōichi?). Eight years before the story begins, Toichi was hired by a[2] criminal organization[3] (AKA: The Black Organization) to find and steal a specific and supposedly magical jewel. This jewel, known as the "Pandora Gem" was said to ooze liquid "tears" during the passing of a particular comet, that when consumed, would grant immortality. After realizing just who Toichi was dealing with, he decided to back out of the deal. The organization later murdered him during a magic show, and his death was framed as an accident.

The current Kaitou Kid is Toichi's son Kaito Kuroba (黒羽快斗 Kuroba Kaito?), a 17-year-old student and rather gifted magician who learned magic and the art of disguise from his father as a child. Besides Kaito, Kuroba Toichi also trained Vivian Kudo, (Shinichi's mother- from Detective Conan) in the art of disguise for her acting job[4]. Chris Vineyard (Vermouth) was also one of his students, who at the time went by the name of Sharon[5].

Inspector Nakamori has always pursued the Kid, but oddly enough he approves of his daughter Aoko's childhood friend, one Kuroba Kaito. Aoko Nakamori is Kaito's love interest in the manga Magic Kaito. Saguru Hakuba, the son of a high police official, is Kaito's rival for Aoko and also attempts to catch the Phantom Thief Kid. Saguru believes that Kaito might be the Kaitou Kid, but can never prove it. In addition, the witch, Akako Koizumi, has also expressed interests in him, and tries to cast spells on him to win his love, which strangely for her, don't work.

Kaitou Kid uses a number of gadgets to help with his thievery. Most notable are the sharp, thin metal playing cards shot by a card gun, a cape that can unfold into a hang glider, pink smoke bombs, and blow-up mannequins that act as decoys to distract the inspector. Kaitou Kid is also known for his acrobatic and daredevil-like antics (jumping off buildings, climbing through narrow places like air vents and sewers, etc) and his ability to imitate practically any voice without the aid of a special device, like Conan does. He also has an assistant who had previously worked for his father-- an older man named Jii.

Hardly anyone knows about Kaito's true identity. After learning about his father's alter ego, Kaito picks up where his father left off and assumes his identity in order to investigate his mysterious death. He finds out that his father was in fact murdered by a mysterious crime syndicate for refusing to assist them in their search for the Pandora gem. He then vows to find it before they do and destroy it- in order to deny immortality to his father's murderers. In addition, he tries to lure them out with his incredibly publicized and flamboyant heists. He even goes to such lengths as to announce the time and place of his heists in the form of riddles that he sends to Nakamori beforehand, which drive the inspector crazy. He grows to love being a criminal, and loves the challenges of his "hobby".

Finally, he also vows to do his best to never let anyone get hurt, and although Inspector Nakamori always tries to catch him, he has a respect for the man. Oddly enough, the inspector and Toichi were good friends before his death, and the inspector still seems unaware that the present Kaitou Kid is not the original.

The only clues that Kaito has about the gem are that it glows red under the full moon and that it is a doublet: a gem hidden within a larger gem. Thus, it would have to be a relatively large one with a bizarre history, and always stored in a place that never receives moonlight. This is why he researches and steals famous priceless gems with odd histories from incredibly well-defended areas, and always returns them after the very next full moon if they are not what he is looking for.

As a person, Kaito is very intelligent, and a class clown at his school. He loves pulling harmless pranks on people, often involving magic, to get a laugh. Whenever he plays a trick on Aoko, she chases him around with whatever she can find- namely mops, brooms, etc. but she secretly likes him too, and thinks he is a nice guy at heart. She is unaware that Kaito is the "Kaitou Kid" and hates the "Kid" because not only does he steal things which she believes is wrong (even though he returns most of his loot later), but her father is always off chasing him and not spending any time with her.

[edit] Characters

Kaito Kuroba (黒羽 快斗 Kuroba Kaito?)
Voiced by: Kappei Yamaguchi (Japanese), Jerry Jewell (English)
Kaito is a smart, quirky, 17-year-old magician. He's childhood friends with Aoko Nakamouri, is good at all sports except for ice skating, and is absolutely deathly afraid of fish. Kaito is also the Kaitou Kid (怪盗キッド Kaitō Kiddo?), the phantom thief. He gives the police riddles describing when, where, and what he is going to steal in a heist, and returns or throws away everything he steals. Kaito constantly teases Aoko, but he seems to have feelings for her. The name "Kaito" has no special meaning, but is a pun off the word "Kaitou" which means "Phantom thief." "Kuroba" means "Black Feather;" it is also a pun on the English word "clover," which Kid sports on his monocle. Shinichi Kudo from Aoyama's Detective Conan physically resembles Kaito. The only major difference in their appearance are their hairstyles. In the Detective Conan anime Kaito and Shinichi are voiced by the same seiyū. In English, he is known as the Phantom Thief Kid.
Aoko Nakamori (中森 青子 Nakamori Aoko?)
Voiced by: Yukiko Iwai and Minami Takayama
Kaito's childhood friend. Kaito often teases her and flips her skirt, driving her to chase him wielding her weapon of choice, a mop, even though she is secretly in love with him. She is the daughter of Inspector Nakamori, so she hates Kaitou KID. Ran Mouri from Aoyama's Detective Conan physically resembles Aoko. Like Kaito and Shinichi, the major difference in their appearances are their hairstyles.
Ginzo Nakamori (中森 銀三 Nakamori Ginzō?) / Inspector Mace Fuller
Voiced by: Unshou Ishizuka (Japanese), Jay Jones (English)
Aoko's father. He is the inspector who is head of the Kaito Kid Task force. He is known for his colorful, loud curses. He mistakenly believes that the current Kaitou Kid is the one that he started chasing after more than 20 years ago. Kogoro Mori from Aoyama's Detective Conan physically resembles Nakamori.
Saguru Hakuba (白馬 探 Hakuba Saguru?)
Voiced by: Akira Ishida
A teenage detective from the United Kingdom. He is blond and very smart. He gets the closest to catching KID. He is almost certain that his classmate, Kaito, is the phantom thief, he even has DNA from Kaito's hair connecting him to KID, however he doesn't have enough evidence proving that theory.
Note: He appears in episode 479 and 219 of Detective Conan, as well as in the 10th movie.
Akako Koizumi (小泉 紅子 Koizumi Akako?)
Voiced by: Megumi Hayashibara
A girl that goes to Kaito's school. She is actually a witch with real magic, which causes her to be very critical of Kaito's "sleight-of-hand" magic. She knows that he is Kid, but has not told anyone. Akako is very much a seductress, and is "trying to make every man her slave". She is at first angry at Kaito because she cannot "control" him, but then she grows to like him. She seems to be able to summon Lucifer at will.
Toichi Kuroba (黒羽 盗一 Kuroba Tōichi?)
Voiced by: Shuuichi Ikeda
Kaito's father. Toichi was the previous Kid. He was a famous magician that everyone liked. He taught Kaito many magic tricks and to always use 'Poker Face' when he was little. When he was KID, both he and Booker(Yuusaku) Kudo used to be rivals. Toichi died in an 'accident' while performing a trick, but Kaito finds out later that it was murder.
Note: He has a similar appearance to Kudo Shinichi's father, Kudo Yuusaku in Detective Conan and also taught disguise to both Shinichi's mother, Yukiko, and Vermouth, who are characters of Detective Conan.
Konosuke Jii (寺井 黄之助 Ji'i Kōnosuke?)
Voiced by: Kaneta Kimotsuki
He's an old man who is a side-kick to Toichi. He starts helping Kaito, who he calls "Young Master". For an old man he is very strong and skilled. He seldom appears in the series. It appears that he has a pool bar named Blue Parrot (ブルーパロット Burū Parotto?).
Shintaro Chaki (中森 銀三 Chaki Shintarou?)
Voiced by:
He is an inspector of the Kaito Kid Task force. He also appeared in Detective Conan
Keiko Momoi (桃井 恵子 Momoi Keiko?)
Voiced by: Yukiko Iwai
Aoko's best friend. Keiko is a brunette who wears glasses. She envies Aoko because she has a childhood friend (Kaito) and Hakuba likes her too. She's good at ice-skating, but does not know how to ski.

Other naming puns in Magic Kaito include:

  • Sabrina - A country named after another of Audrey Hepburn's movies. (Magic Kaito vol.1 ch.2 警官がいっぱいの巻 The One Full of Policemen)
  • Silver -- Both a color name, and a pun on fictional pirate "Long John Silver." (Magic Kaito vol.1 ch.5 海賊船浮上せずの巻 The One Without Raising the Pirate Ship.)
  • Tsuujiro Hasura -- The name Hasura has the same pronunciation as "hustler" in English. (Magic Kaito vol.2 ch.7 ハスラーvs.マジシャン Hustler vs. Magician)
  • The last name of Kuroba is also used in many puns, as it is pronounced identically with the English word "clover". The decoration hanging from Kaitou Kid's Monocle shows a four-leaf clover, and he posed as a Count Clover in vol.1 ch.2 of the manga.
  • Jii Kōnosuke is often referred to as 'Jii-san', which is a term often used for older citizens.
