Maggie Renfro

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Maggie Mae Renfro (born November 14, 1895) is an American supercentenarian and, at 112, the eighth-oldest living person in the U.S. and the oldest person in Louisiana.[1] Renfro is also one of the 20 oldest persons in the world.[2][3] She and her sisters Carrie Thornton (born in 1902) and Rose Warren (born in 1906) are the oldest living sisters in the world.[4]

Renfro claims she was born on November 14, 1894, which, if true, would make her a year older than previously expected and 5th oldest person in the world.[3] However, the United States Census of 1900 places her as a 4-year-old, making Renfro born in 1895.[1] In any case, she was born in Athens, Louisiana[2], the fourth of 11 children born to Wylie and Dellie Thornton.[3]

At age 19, she became a cook for a road crew.[3] Soon afterward, she moved to Madisonville, Texas, and later to Houston, where she met her husband Rudy.[3] The two had no children, and Renfro moved to Minden, Louisiana in 1971 following his death, where she currently lives.[3]

She attributed her longevity to being "a good servant for God."[2] Rosie lives in the care of her relatives, like Maggie, while Carrie lives in an extensive care hospital in Shreveport, Louisiana.[2] The trio were honored by the Minden City Council in July 2006.[3]
