[edit] Biography
Magdi Rúzsa, a 22 year-old Hungarian girl originally from Mali Iđoš (Hungarian: Kishegyes; a village situated in the north Serbian province of Vojvodina) was discovered in 2006, thanks to the third edition of the televised pop idol contest Megasztár (Megastar) in Hungary.
She grew up in her home town, but studied in Subotica as an obstetric nurse. Following high-school, her ambition was to attend medical university. Being unable to afford it, she decided to try out for a pop idol contest in Budapest.
After winning the competition, Magdi's album - featuring the songs performed by her during the show's finals - went triple platinum and to date has sold around 80,000 copies. Her first artist album Ördögi Angyal (Devilish Angel) was released on her birthday (November 28), and has sold 36,000 copies so far with the release of one video. These two records were the biggest selling releases in 2006 in Hungary. She often performs songs by her favorite singer Janis Joplin. Magdi was voted New Talent of the Year in 2006, representing Hungary at the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest in Helsinki. She selected her own song Unsubstantial Blues. She decided to sing in English, because she felt that the lyrics of the song are of high importance and wanted people to understand what "Unsubstantial Blues" was all about. The semi-finals took place on May 10, 2007, and Magdi made her way to the finals with the 2nd place and 224 points behind the eventual winner Serbia. At the final on May 12, 2007 she finished 9th with 128 points. Being the songwriter of Unsubstantial Blues, she was also granted the Best Composer Award, which is given to the best songwriter among the Eurovision song composers every year.
