[edit] History
In the past, the territory was populated by the Papagos and Pimas. In 1687 with the arrival of Father Eusebio Francisco Kino in Sonora, the first missions were developed. The municipal seat was founded at the beginning of 17th century by the Lieutenant Juan Bautista Escalante. The city was founded by decree in December 1923.[citation needed] "Santa María Magdalena de Buquivaba" was the name of the city until 1966, when the name was changed to Magdalena de Kino.[citation needed]
