Coordinates: 12°58′N 77°14′E / 12.97, 77.23 Magadi is a town in Bangalore Rural district in the Indian state of Karnataka.Magadi was capital of Kempe Gowda who built Bangalore. It is also the setting of the true story "Old Munnusamy and the man-eater of Magadi" by Kenneth Anderson (writer). Since the days of Kenneth Anderson, the wildlife in Magadi has been greatly reduced due to poaching and habitat loss.

As of 2001 India census[2], Magadi had a population of 25,000. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Magadi has an average literacy rate of 67%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 73%, and female literacy is 60%.
