Mafia II (or Mafia 2) is an upcoming sandbox-style Third-person shooter video game which is the sequel to Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven. It is being developed by 2K Czech, previously known as Illusion Softworks,[2] and will be published by 2K Games. Development of Mafia 2 was announced on August 21, 2007 at the Leipzig Games Convention.[3] The game will be set in the 1940s and '50s in the fictional Empire City (a reference to New York's state nickname "The Empire State")[4] and will be available for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. It is set to be released sometime before October 31, 2009. [5]

A trailer is released for the game, The first scene takes place in a low-key restaurant where the Mafia boss (or Don), Luca, is having dinner with Henry, Joe and Vito. After some small talk, Luca asks Vito if he was against killing "human animals". Following afterwards is a collection of clips from the game's cutscenes and possibly gameplay. The next scene takes place in a warehouse. A man is crawling on the floor, begging for his life. Henry fires his gun at the man and the scene ends. In the last scene, three gangsters (Joe, Vito and Eddie) are in a car, driving to a suitable place to dispose of a body. The song "Oh Marie" by Louis Prima features in the video.

The game will begin with your character, Vito, returning home from World War II. Vito had used a military tour as a way of ducking jail time for a botched robbery. Vito reunites with his old friend, Joe Barbaro, and the two quickly take up a living in the criminal underworld. The game tells the story of their friendship, with a boasted 2 hours of game cut scenes. The original game, Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven, had a screenplay of 400 pages, opposed to the 700 pages of this upcoming game, expected to overshadow the original title. Daniel Vavra, the writer and director of the original and the sequel discusses the new angle of the game stating, "The old game was a tribute to gangster movies, a romantic vision.. Mafia 2 is grittier, real, a darker world, and the effects are based in reality". The Official Playstation Magazine says "A high body count is still promised in this tale set in a fictional city 'inspired by' New York of the 1940s and '50s, but those casualties will come the hard way- through small-scale operations rather than mass firefights.
The game is a drama. It tells how to become "made", how to become a wiseguy, and how to screw it all up. These screw-ups will be on you as the player, and the game includes several situations where you can decide the outcome, and your choice will lead to one of several different endings.
Vito's criminal ascension starts with Mikey, a mechanic who gets an earful from Joe for getting his greasy fingers all over Joe's clean jacket. Mikey also needs a certain type of car to chop for parts, and will pay $400 for one that the police are not tailing. Soon enough, Vito, Joe, and Henry (already a made guy) find themselves battling with, for, against, and around three crime factions: the Falconi, Vinci, and Clemente families.[6]

- Readable newspapers to learn about recent news between 1945 and the early '50s.
- A completely open-ended game map of 10 square miles. No restrictions are included from the start of the game.[7]
- Cars will play a central role, based on models of the time, and changing with the era.
- Laws, including traffic, must be obeyed, but the police interaction will be toned down compared to the original.
- Although fictional, Empire City will feature familiar sights such as the Brooklyn Bridge and the Empire State Building.[8]
- The player can get "very high" in the city, adding a possible vertical element.
- The player will be able to buy a home where they can store gear and use as a home base.
- Restaurants will be accessible to buy food and drinks to increase health.[9]
- Stolen cars can now be upgraded at the "Empire Automobile Shop"; engines can be replaced, cars can be resprayed, and interior can be refitted, to name a few.
- Things such as sink faucets, switches, bottles, and chairs will all be interactive, as well as radios that the player can turn on to hear a few licensed period tunes.[10]
- Cars can suffer panel damage, get dirty and explode. They can also run out of fuel.[9]
- NPCs will smoke, read newspapers, and wait for buses, while homeless people search through nearby garbage bins.[10][8]
- Interacting with objects in the environment involves two action buttons- a standard and a "violent" option- used in context-sensitive situations.
- A map will be included as in the original, to simplify navigation.
- The checkpoint system has been completely overhauled.
- Gyms will be accessible to unlock new combos and fighting styles.
- As seen in screenshots, Vito will be able to hail taxi cabs and they will take him wherever he wants[11].
- Trunks can open, and weapons and bodies may be stashed there.[10]
- The player will own their own car that can even be customized with a personal license plate.[8]
