[edit] Reasons for Madrid Deorganizing?

I came across this article while researching United States Ghost towns. Unfortunately, the article gave no reason for the deorganization of Madrid, Maine. A cursory Google search led to many pages that mentioned that taxes in many small communities in Maine are considerably higher than the deorganized areas around it. One page cited Madrid's tax rate to be about 27% while the deorganized territory is about 10%. Apparently, many towns are looking at deorganization as a way to reduce runaway tax rates. Seeing as it appears to be a growing trend and as Madrid, Maine is not the only town to do so, I really think that this article should include some information about this. I have some potential sources as well: This local article about another town deorganized, found here: http://downeast.godengo.com/Down-East-Magazine/October-2005/Unorganized-Territory/ (You may have to enter either "Unorganized Territory" or "Deorganization of Madrid" into a search box because it appears that by typing in the URL, it leads you to the main page for the magazine). I found a few others, but, as with this one, I don't quite know it they're okay to use on Wikipedia. Mandanthe1 03:00, 4 November 2007 (UTC)
