August 22 is celebrated as Madras Day to commemorate the founding of city of Madras (now called as Chennai located in the state of Tamil Nadu, India). It was on this day in 1639 that a small piece of land where Fort St George stands today was transacted by British East India Company.

Originally,This celebration used to last for a day but now it extends for a week! The event gains a lot of popularity every year! The most popular thing in the event is the Chennai T-SHIRT. The old T-shirt used have 'Namma Chennai' on it. Which means 'Our Chennai' in Tamil. The new one has 'Kapi' and a picture of a coffee tumbler on it. 'Kapi' actually means Coffee. There is a competition to design the official Madras day T-shirt. Other than this, there are heritage walks for childrean, adults, and there are also quizzes in English and Tamil.
