Madonna has worked with many successful directors and produced music videos that are considered by some as works of art. Her videos have depicted controversial subjects such as teen pregnancy, racism, religion, sex, and violence. Her 1995 video to "Bedtime Story", directed by Mark Romanek, was acquired for the New York Museum of Modern Art's permanent film and video collection. [1]
Madonna ranked # 1 on VH1's "50 Greatest Women Of The Video Era" show list. [1]

- 1a The live version of "Like a Virgin" was used to promote Madonna Live: The Virgin Tour VHS.
- 2 There are two official versions of "True Blue": the European version with Madonna was directed by James Foley; the US version from MTV's Make My Video Contest was directed by Ángel Gracia and Cliff Guest (Madonna does not appear in the US version).
- 3 The music video for "Hanky Panky" was actually a live clip from Blond Ambition World Tour 1990 filmed at the SkyDome in Toronto, Canada.
- 4 The live versions of "Like a Virgin" and "Holiday" were used to promote the film Truth or Dare.
- 5 A censored and uncensored version of the "Erotica" video exist, though both were directed by Fabien Baron.
- 6 In addition to the standard video of "Fever" directed by Stéphane Sednaoui, a montage video was released to Europe containing clips from "La Isla Bonita", "Express Yourself", "Cherish" and "Justify My Love" videos.

- 9 Madonna withdrew her original video for "American Life", which featured violent war images and a strong peace message, after a day of European airings, claiming that, in light of the recent start of the Iraq War, she did not wish to risk offending anyone who might misinterpret her video's meaning. An edited version featuring Madonna singing in military garb in front of world flags was instead released. A third version of the video, which features a slightly different ending from the original video, also exists.
- 10 "Me Against the Music" was a song by Britney Spears featuring Madonna.
- 11 The live versions of "Jump" and "Ray of Light" were used to promote The Confessions Tour CD+DVD.
