Madona (pronunciation ) is a city in Latvia and center of the Madona District.

[edit] History

Madona as a populated place has existed from ancient times. The burial sites found in the area of the present town from 7-12 the centuries testify to that. It is considered that in ancient writings Madona was first mentioned in 1461 as Birzi estate belonging to Riga archbishop. In 1461 the area of Birzi consisting of 4 acres of land was handed over to feuds by archbishop Sylvester.

A local community status was acquired on 1 July, 1921 but the status of a town was granted 7 July 1926. Madona as a densely populated place started to form in 1903 alongside with the construction of the railroad Stukmani – Gulbene - Valka and railway station "Madona".

In 1932 a radio station with a 230 metres tall radio mast was built there. The mast was destroyed in 1943.
