I heard that at one time Madison was the county seat for St. Francis County, Arkansas. The story that I heard was that people from Forrest City stole all the records, burned down the court house in Madison and stored them out on Barrow Hill Road. From the stories I've been told, I visualize it at the fork where one side goes on to Hughes Cemetery and the other side goes where the lake used to be. I can't remember the name of the lake, but, I remember as a child riding across the dam there. It sounds like the county records were in a building where Longs or Flowers grocery was. I can't remember the rest of the story how, the records and courthouse winded up where it is today.
