[edit] Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[1] Madippakkam had a population of 14,940. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Madippakkam has an average literacy rate of 88%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 90%, and female literacy is 85%. Almost every family has a vehicle - usually a two-wheeler - but cars are increasing in number. There are a lot of buses that connect people to the nearest suburban railway station which is St. Thomas Mount. Another suburban railway station near Madipakkam is Pazhavanthangal. Autorickshaws are very commonly used but are considered a little expensive. A few horse carriages still come from St. Thomas Mount station but are seldom seen these days.

Definitely one of the most populous places in Chennai, the real estate prices of this suburb are soaring rapidly by the day. High rise apartments are coming up in huge numbers. Its very rare nowadays to see an independent house being built. This is certainly going to become even worse once the Railway Station at Velachery becomes operational. The same is nearer than the St. Thomas Mount Station and is expected to take a major load of commuters from Madipakkam towards the main city. The Inner Ring road project work has started on the Madipakkam side connecting the incomplete leg of 6 km to Ashok Nagar.

[edit] Schools

Madipakkam has a number of schools catering to students from Kindergarten to Higher Secondary. Few of them are New Prince Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Holy Family Convent, St.Thomas Matriculation Higher Secondary School , Sai, Brilliant, Rajkumar Sulochana, Sai Matriculation School, Holy Prince, Prince Matriculation Higher Secondary School and Kings Matriculation Higher Secondary School.

[edit] Conveniences

Being mostly a residential area, there are ample shops and quite a few banks. Bank of Tanjore was among the first to be set up, which was acquired by Indian Bank. Now it has HDFC Bank, State Bank of India & ATM, ICICI Bank and Axis bank apart from Indian Bank. Corporation Bank has recently opened a branch and ATM centre in this locality near Koot road.

There are a few super markets in this area, the most prominent ones being Fresh@Madipakkam, Trinethra and Subhiksha. Some of the prominent communities include Ayyappa Nagar, Ram Nagar, Sadasiva Nagar, Raghava Nagar, Karthikeyapuram and Perumal nagar.

There are about 4 petrol bunks (Brit. English) or gas stations (Amer. English) nearby. The place is pretty much self sufficient with most shops present nearby.

[edit] Connectivity

The Madipakkam Main Road is also referred to as Koot Road because, the main landmark on the western side in this suburb is a point where four major roads meet. This name comes from the Tamil word 'kootu' which means 'junction'. Technically its part of the Medavakkam Main Road, but in Madipakkam its just referred to as Koot Road. The Velachery side of Madipakkam is being referred to as the MRTS Madipakkam due to its proximity to the Velachery Railway Station a project under the Mass Rapid Transit System (Chennai).
