[edit] Plot summary

In an old house in Paris that was covered with vines lived twelve little girls in two straight lines. In two straight lines they broke their bread and brushed their teeth and went to bed. They smiled at the good and frowned at the bad and sometimes they were very sad. They left the house at half past nine in two straight lines in rain or shine — the smallest one was Madeline.

Madeline attends a boarding school with eleven other girls, where she is the only orphan. Their teacher, Miss Clavel, is a nun. The school, in the home of Lady Covington, faces eviction by Lord Covington following his wife's death. Lord Covington's efforts to sell the property to a series of ambassadorial couples is frustrated by Madeline and the girls and by Pepito, the rowdy son of the neighboring Spanish ambassador. An original plot element involves the attempted kidnapping of Pepito and Madeline.

[edit] Filming

Filmed in Paris in 1997, the story is set in Paris of the 1950s. Many of the landmarks from the books appear in the film, although some were too crowded with modern traffic to be used.[1]
