- Being made refers to a formal induction into the Mafia, or the status one achieves by virtue of this ceremony.
- Being made (or read) is having one's real identity detected. This applies to undercover law enforcement officers (by criminal targets), transgendered individuals (by a stranger) or many other people in many situations.
- In the New York City Police Department, to be "made" is sometimes colloquial slang used to describe a promotion from police officer to detective or the acquisition of a gold shield; usually indicative of a promotion in rank (sergeant, lieutenant, captain, etc.) and salary.
