[edit] Character history

Maddie first appears in Oakdale in the summer of 2005. She wants to fix her brother Henry's relationship with his soon to be ex-wife, Katie. That does not work.

Later, she moves into Katie's sister Margo's house. She starts dating Margo's son, Casey Hughes.

It is revealed that Maddie was raped by her brother in law, Louis Browning. This had happened before she arrived in Oakdale.

Casey is later imprisoned, and while he and Maddie initially stay together, eventually he sends her word that he won't be returning to Oakdale after being released, because he feels she deserves someone better than him.

Maddie is devastated, but eventually starts a whirlwind summer romance with new WOAK intern Noah Mayer, sleeping with him during a work trip to Branson, Missouri. Later in the summer Noah convinces Maddie to stay in Oakdale and join him at Oakdale University, rather than attend Wesleyan as she had long dreamed, and eventually, he asks her to get an apartment with him. Maddie is never completely comfortable with the speed of the relationship or its intensity, and she realizes her intuition is right when it is revealed late that summer that Noah is attracted to her best friend, Luke Snyder.

Maddie breaks up with Noah, and spends some time fighting with Luke, before coming to terms with what had happened and ultimately supporting her ex-boyfriend and her best friend getting together. She briefly feigns a reconciliation with Noah for the sake of his departing homophobic father, but this comes back to haunt her when Noah's father stumbles upon Luke and Noah kissing. Noah's father blasts her for lying, but after apologizing, Maddie tells him he also needs to apologize to Noah for his actions, and informs him that he risks losing his son if he can't accept him for who he is.

Maddie later expresses concern to Luke and her brother Henry that there might be something wrong with Noah's father, citing her first-hand experience with "psycho-relatives". After Noah's father tries to kill Luke during a fishing trip, Maddie is the only one left to comfort a distraught and drunken Noah. Noah kisses Maddie, but Maddie assures him that his coming out was for the best, and she couldn't be happy with him knowing what she knows now. Maddie then finds out that there is still a place available for her at Wesleyan, and decides to transfer, leaving Oakdale behind.
